Pioneering Breakthroughs for a Healthier World
At Akadeum Life Sciences, our mission is to create separation technologies to advance human health. We envision a world where innovative separations empower researchers and clinicians to unlock breakthroughs in diagnostics, therapeutics, and basic research.
Innovation Is the DNA of Akadeum
Guided by the belief that innovations in separation will improve human health, Akadeum has achieved numerous industry firsts and groundbreaking advancements that exemplify our commitment to our mission and values:
1. First to Commercialize Flotation-Based Cell Separation
Akadeum’s proprietary Buoyancy Activated Cell Sorting (BACS™) microbubble technology was the first flotation-based cell separation system to reach the market. This redefined traditional workflows and set a new standard in performance, ease of use and scalability. Akadeum pioneered the first self-separating and scale invariant separation product on the market.
2. Developed the Most Gentle Separation Technology
Akadeum’s microbubble technology is the most gentle on cells, preserving their viability and functionality for sensitive applications like cell and gene therapy.
3. First to Achieve Negative Selection at Scale
With the Alerion™ Microbubble Cell Separation System, Akadeum achieved negative selection of entire leukopaks (20B cells) in an hour or less. Negative selection at scale allows users to isolate T cells without touching them (label free), preventing unwanted activation and preserving all subpopulation of T cells that are impactful in therapeutics.
4. Built the Highest Capacity Cell Separation Chamber Ever Engineered (BioRise™)
The BioRise™ Consumable is the largest capacity separation chamber ever engineered, designed to handle unprecedented sample volumes and enable industrial-scale cell therapy manufacturing, capable of simultaneous processing of multiple samples.
5. First to Develop Multiplex Separation Techniques
By integrating buoyancy and magnetic separation (BAM), Akadeum created a groundbreaking two-bead separation technology, setting a new benchmark for specificity and flexibility in cell isolation.
6. First to Develop and Commercialize Microbubbles for Nucleic Acid Extraction
Partnering with Agilent Technologies, we developed the Viral RNA/DNA Wastewater Prep Kit,this represented the first application of microbubbles for nucleic acid extraction, enabling reliable surveillance in public health and research.

A History of Scientific Excellence
With over 50 publications referencing Akadeum in the last 3 years, the company works hard to advance scientific research in our own work and for our customers. Akadeum products have been used in numerous publications of high-impact journals over the past several years.
In 2021, Cell Reports featured a study utilizing Akadeum’s Mouse B Cell Isolation Kit to investigate the role of NUR77 in regulating B cell clonal dominance during early T-dependent immune responses. This research provided critical insights into immune regulation mechanisms. In 2023, Oncoimmunology published a study employing Akadeum’s Mouse B Cell Isolation Kit to demonstrate that B cells require licensing by dendritic cells to serve as primary antigen-presenting cells for plasmid DNA. This finding has significant implications for vaccine development and immunotherapy.
Additionally, Akadeum’s Streptavidin Microbubbles have been instrumental in various research endeavors. For instance, a 2024 study in Nature Communications utilized these microbubbles to explore the cis-regulatory evolution of the Ly49 gene family, shedding light on natural killer cell receptor diversity. These publications underscore the versatility and efficacy of Akadeum’s microbubble technology in facilitating groundbreaking research across immunology and molecular biology.
