Scientist

Location: Ann Arbor, MI

Start Date: Immediate Opening

Job Description:

Akadeum is a startup company, working to create the simplest separation ever and is seeking a Scientist to join the product development team. This role will be to develop a new line of products with our microbubble technology platform. The candidate will work closely with a team of scientists to characterize novel separation products for positive capture and release of cells and other biological targets (like DNA, protein, etc). The candidate will be involved in experimental design and hands-on testing of microbubbles with cells–the scientist will develop and optimize the best way to capture and release cells. We are looking for a highly self-organized and motivated candidate who is equally comfortable working in a team and independently to solve open ended-problems.

Responsibilities:

  • Main responsibilities involve developing new technologies and products using microbubbles for capture and release of human and animal cells. This may also include other biological targets like DNA, protein, etc.
  • Development of protocols for capture and release of cells, DNA, protein, etc. from Akadeum’s core microbubble particle.
  • The role will require coordination and collaboration with the development team, using in-house-developed chemistries, capture protocols, and engineered separators.
  • 75% or more of job duties will be carried out at the bench at the direction of the Chief Technology Officer.
  • Analyzing and documenting data.
  • Summarizing and presenting test results.
  • Running relevant microbubble assays, analysis, and downstream testing.
  • Assist in product and technology testing for both existing products and products under development.

Qualifications:

  • Experience using plastic surfaces, glass surfaces, microparticles, or nanoparticles to capture and release cells or other biological entities. For example, ideal candidate has  working with cleavable linkers and/or enzymatic release mechanisms.
  • Experience working with magnetic particles, silica particles, or other particles for separations of cells, DNA, proteins or other analytes is a plus, but not required.
  • Understanding and, ideally, a working knowledge of separation processes used in the life sciences.
  • Experience working with cellular release mechanisms, such as enzymes, linkers, elution, and others.
  • Degree in biological sciences, biomedical engineering, applied physics, or equivalent.
  • 2+ years of working experience in academia or industry.
  • Fastidious record keeping skills.
  • General basic lab skills (pipetting, preparation of buffers, etc.).
  • The ability to prioritize effectively within a multi-task environment is critical.
